The Bouvier des Flandres is a herding dog breed that originated in Flanders, a region divided between Belgium and France. This is a breed created for work – originally they guarded herds of animals, drove horses and sheep to farms, even pulled carts. This is a working breed that has human cooperation as well as effort in its genes. Even the name of the breed suggests it – translated from French it is “Shepherd of cows from Flanders”. Instead you will meet with the name Vlaamse Koehond (Flemish Shepherd Dog). Currently, they work for the border guards, as police, defense and guard dogs. They also get along great as family members.

Bouvier is a powerful dog – the weight of the male varies between 36 and 56 kg, females are slightly smaller and lighter. Its sheer mass and the resulting strength require a guardian who can handle the socialization of such a friend.

Dogs of this breed are of a strong, compact build. They feel powerful but not heavy. They are fast and agile. They have a characteristic rough coat with a lot of undercoat. They will require regular brushing and trimming if they are to be shown.

They are very intelligent dogs, eager and quick to learn. They need positive reinforcements based on their bond with their caregiver. They require movement and activity. They will feel best if we provide them with a large space (a house with a garden), but they will also find themselves in an apartment, provided that they get enough walks and play outside every day. They are extremely durable and patient.
